Avopass reduces the harmful effects of flying by carbon offsetting 200% of emissions and investing in sustainable aviation fuel sources.
In 2022, we have a unique opportunity to rebuild travel in a better way. We need to make travel sustainable, with long-term positive impacts on communities and the planet.
From the beginning, Avopass has focused on improving travel's sustainability. Our logo is based on the curved wingtips of modern planes like the 787 Dreamliner, the most fuel effecient wide-body airplane.
Aviation industry burns through 1.8 billion barrels of oil a year. Flights were responsible for 2.4 percent of global energy-related carbon dioxide emissions in 2018 — a figure expected to grow rapidly in coming years.1Washington Post, June 2018.
Flying is one of the single largest contributors to your carbon footprint. For example, on a flight from New York to London, over 986kg of CO2 is emitted. In more than 50 countries, the average citizen emits less carbon than this in an ENTIRE year.2The Guardian, July 2019.
The aviation industry currently makes up 2.4% of the world’s carbon emissions, but this figure is increasing and is projected to grow to 25% by 2050 if no action is taken.3Forbes, September 2019.
This large increase will occur because there is compelling replacement to kerosene-fueled aircraft. Other sectors will be able to decrease their emissions, but the aviation industry will find it difficult.
If aviation doesn’t get greener, in 2050 it could become the number 1 carbon-polluting industry in the world--a title we'd like to avoid.
Avopass was created with long-term, sustainable travel as a goal. To approach this problem in front of us, we’re taking a two-pronged approach:
Avopass directly accounts for your initial carbon emissions on your flight by offsetting the carbon emissions by 200%. We do this through the UN carbon offset program. This is just a short-term solution, however.
In the long-term, Avopass has the goal of reducing direct emissions from flying by 100%. One of the most promising technologies to do this is the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
The infrastructure and technology to directly reduce carbon emissions when flying are unfortunately not available today. Electric planes will take decades to develop and batteries can’t match the energy density of liquid fuel for long-distance flights.4Forbes, September 2019.
Luckily, however, systems to offset these emissions in other places do exist today. By supporting a separate project, you cancel out your emissions to reach a net-zero impact or even better.
This is what we are doing at Avopass right now for every flight booked on our site--we offset the complete amount of carbon emissions from your flight, and then do it again for good measure--meaning that you’ll be taking carbon out of the atmosphere when you book with us.
For each flight you book, you’ll receive a copy of the UN Certificate we received when offsetting the corresponding tons of carbon from your flight.
The projects we support include renewable energy projects in developing countries.
It’s vital that we take direct steps to reduce emissions from flying. Carbon offsets aren’t good enough. That’s why we at Avopass are focusing on a promising development--Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
Sustainable Aviation Fuel is an alternative green type of fuel that is sourced from agricultural or waste byproducts. It "closes" the carbon cycle, in effect reducing emissions by 80% or better.5International Air Transport Association, 2019.
Paired with greater increases in engine efficiency and the introduction of electrification, emissions in the future can be entirely offset.
SAF has been used on over 250,000 flights already and is a proven technology. However, in 2020, SAF made up just 0.015% of total consumption.6International Air Transport Association, 2020.
Avopass will transition from generic carbon offsets to investment in sustainable aviation fuel as we grow to help accelerate its adoption.
We created Avopass to make it easier to be held accountable for the negative side effects of travel and alleviate the burdern on our planet.
By signing up for Avopass and using it to book your flights, you can help send a message to the industry: the negative costs of carbon emissions must be internalized by corporations, whether or not a government tax requires them to be.
