Attention experienced travelers! Get ready to add a new, cost-effective option to your travel itinerary. Icelandic low-cost carrier Play is extending its reach in North America with a new destination in Hamilton, Ontario. Not only will this allow travelers to access the city of Hamilton, but it will also serve as a gateway to the greater Toronto metropolitan area when flights launch on June 22nd.
This marks the airline's first destination in Canada, having previously focused on the United States, with connecting flights to multiple cities in Europe via the carrier's hub at Keflavik International Airport (KEF) near Reykjavik, Iceland. The current U.S. gateways are Boston Logan International Airport (BOS), Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI), Dulles International Airport (IAD) and the New York City area via Stewart International Airport (SWF) in Newburgh, New York.
The decision to add Hamilton to the airline's network is in response to the increasing demand for international travel and strong bookings for existing routes. Play also reported flying over 789,000 passengers and maintained a 95% on-time arrival rate in 2022.
From Hamilton's John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport (YHM) – about 50 miles from Toronto – passengers can connect to 15 European destinations such as Berlin, London, Paris, Copenhagen and Dublin. With this addition, seasoned travelers now have another affordable option for European travel, as Play's low-cost model charges less for fares but more for additional services like checked baggage and seat selection, a model similar to that of Wow Air.
In summary, Play's expansion to Hamilton, Ontario, allows experienced travelers to have another cost-effective alternative when flying to Europe, and it also gives them access to the greater Toronto metro area. So mark your calendars, tickets go on sale in the spring, and be ready to add Hamilton, Ontario, to your list of must-visit destinations!
